The Captain Returns!

He's back baby!

He's back baby!

Hello, Readers! It's me, the roving Panthan, popping in during a break from a long investigation of the outer planets. I promise to resume regular posting as soon as I return to Earth on a more permanent basis.

However, I have news that could not wait. Some of you may have heard rumblings, rumors that a hero legendary throughout the system had come out of retirement. Well, I can confirm: Curt Newton is back!

That's right folks, Captain Future himself, backed by the pen of Alan M. Steele and the Hamilton Estate, is blasting through the spaceways once again! Mr. Steele is a favorite OSS author of mine, despite having only two stories in the genre that I know of: "Martian Blood" and "Frogheads". It's his style that pushes him up to the top of my list for me, that "this is real" feeling that really does credit to his versions of Mars and Venus.

And now, with "Avengers of the Moon", we get to see that feeling lent to Captain Future, hopefully to the credit of both the writer and the character.

I know I can't wait to dig into it!
Up ship!

{Z: I never thought to hear news like this. All the super-villains of the System must be quaking in their space-boots. I just hope that Captain Future and the worlds he visits are still their same old selves; they had better be - otherwise what's the point? Anyhow, the revival of this saga shows that the publishing world is awakening to the big stuff.}

Kaor, Dylan! We're still working out the details, as Zendexor said -- but there'll certainly be a place for well-written short stories in the usual size range (say, 2500-7500 words) and Zendexor's made a very good case for including longer pieces as well. (My previous anthologies ran around 75,000 words each, so there's room.) As for the time frame, there again, that still has to be settled, but it won't be any kind of rush -- my four previous anthologies each got six to nine months of lead time between the official announcement and the last date for stories to be submitted, and something like that seems reasonable for this as well.

With Captain Future leading the way, and legions of Martian swordsmen at our back, I think the future of the Cause is very bright indeed! ;-)

{Z: So, Dylan, you've got time to polish up your magnum opus.}

Exciting!
by: Dylan Jeninga

What's this??

I shall hasten still harder to finish my present work!

What is the date, and where will submissions be taken??

{Z: And what if any are the word-limits on submissions, and the size-limit of the book... and the book's title... matters still to be decided. John has been the prime mover so far, because of his previous experience as an editor of anthologies - a stroke of good fortune for the Cause. We're going to issue a rousing manifesto... sort of, "OSS writers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your realism".}

Everything Old is New Again
by: John Michael Greer

Oh my. This is really good news -- well, for everybody but Ul Quorn and his fellow-villains.

It's also a very good omen for a project Zendexor and I are putting together -- an anthology of original NOSS stories, edited by the two of us, for which we'll be soliciting submissions shortly. (I'll be posting detailed info on this as soon as a few final details get sorted out.) If the world is ready for the return of Captain Future, I think it's ready for our anthology...
